    Universiti Malaya (UM) and Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) have maintained their positions as the top-performing tertiary education institutions in Malaysia, according to the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings. UM has advanced to the 251-300 band in the 2024 edition, up from the 351-400 band last year. UTP has also made significant progress, achieving the 301-350 band from the 401-500 band last year.

    UM has achieved a strong global presence, ranking among the top 10% of universities worldwide in terms of international outlook. It has also been ranked within the top 15%, 20%, and 25% for teaching, research environment, and research quality, respectively. The institution is committed to further enhancing its standing, particularly in industry engagement, where it ranks in the top 40%.

    The vice-chancellor of UM, Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Hamdi Abd Shukor, attributes this achievement to the entire university community, including staff, students, and partners, for their unwavering commitment and contributions. He expresses immense pride in this milestone and acknowledges the dedicated faculty members who have greatly contributed to this success.

    Similarly, the vice-chancellor of UTP, Prof Dr Mohamed Ibrahim Abdul Mutalib, expresses great pride in the institution’s rise in the rankings. UTP maintains its position as Malaysia’s leading private university within these rankings. It serves as a testament to their dedication to academic excellence, pioneering research, and the overall student experience. UTP is grateful for the support and commitment of PETRONAS, academic and industry partners, staff, and students.

    In the latest edition of the rankings, six Malaysian universities have made it into the top 500. These include Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, and Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM). UUM has maintained its position in the 401-500 band, while the other institutions have moved up from the 601-800 band.

    THE chief global affairs officer, Phil Baty, acknowledges the significant gains made by Malaysian universities in the rankings, with almost every institution in the top 10 showing improvements. The country now has six universities in the top 500. Out of the 23 ranked Malaysian universities, 12 have shown improvements, seven have maintained their positions, and one newcomer has entered the top 1,500 band.

    Other Malaysian institutions that have improved their rankings include Universiti Putra Malaysia (501-600), Universiti Malaysia Pahang, Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris, Sunway University, and Universiti Tenaga Nasional (601-800), as well as Universiti Malaysia Sarawak and Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (1,001-1,200).

    Several Malaysian universities have maintained their rankings, including Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (1,001-1,200), Multimedia University, Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka, and Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (1,201-1,500), as well as Universiti Teknologi Mara and Universiti Malaysia Sabah (1501+).

    Addition to the rankings include Universiti Malaysia Perlis and newcomer Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (1,201-1,500), as well as Universiti Kuala Lumpur and Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (1,501+).

    The rankings assessed research-intensive universities across 18 performance indicators, grouped into five pillars: teaching, research quality, research environment, international outlook, and industry. A total of 1,904 universities from 108 countries and regions were included in the 2024 edition of the rankings.

    Globally, Oxford University in the United Kingdom retains the top spot for the eighth consecutive year, followed by Stanford University in the United States and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, US, in third place. China has the highest-ranked universities overall in Asia, with 737 participating universities.
