PETALING JAYA: Umar Osman finished seventh in the men’s 400m final at the World University Games in Chengdu on Thursday (Aug 3).
Despite running in a challenging Lane 1, Umar delivered a commendable performance, clocking in at 46.41s in a fast-paced race that shattered the 26-year-old championship record of 44.81s.
Joao Coelho of Portugal and Reece Nathaniel Holder of Australia both recorded times of 44.79s, surpassing the time set by Clement Chukwu of Nigeria.
After a photo finish, Coelho was declared the winner, with Holder settling for silver. Mihai Sorin Dringo of Romania claimed the bronze medal with a time of 45.27s.
Umar had already broken his own national record of 46.34s during the heats on Tuesday (Aug 1) with a time of 46.33s. He then further improved his performance in the semi-finals, securing his spot in the final with a time of 46.09s on Wednesday (Aug 2).
