Umno and DAP supporters in Penang have announced that they will be voting for each other’s candidates in the upcoming state election, according to party leaders.
“As requested by Lim Guan Eng, our voters will vote for DAP candidates. This is my assurance that I give here today,” said Datuk Musa Sheikh Fadzir, the state Barisan Nasional and Umno chairman, during his speech at the Pakatan Harapan/Barisan manifesto launch and introduction of candidates on Tuesday (Aug 1).
Lim, in his speech, also assured that DAP voters will vote for Umno candidates.
Furthermore, Lim urged the state government to declare a public holiday on election day, which is on Aug 12, in order to encourage a higher voter turnout.
During the event, PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar criticized Perikatan Nasional for spreading slander and called for an end to such tactics.
“Elections are about charting a future for the people, but the Opposition has made it about spreading lies and half-truths to win votes,” Anwar stated.
Goh Choon Aik, the state PKR vice-chairman, expressed confidence in their alliance with Barisan and Pakatan, claiming that they had secured 26 seats in Penang and were set to retain the state for a fourth term.
However, Amanah vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa warned against overconfidence, highlighting the presence of “grey areas” where a clear victory was not guaranteed.
“Let’s be circumspect in our assessment as we do not want to be caught by surprise as what happened in Malay-majority constituencies during the 15th General Election,” Rawa advised.
The state DAP vice-chairman, Zairil Khir Johari, unveiled the party’s manifesto, while caretaker Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who is also the state Pakatan chairman, introduced the election candidates after his speech.
