Umno Youth will not urge its members to participate in the “red shirts” rally organized by Datuk Seri Jamal Md Yunos on September 16, according to Dr. Akmal Saleh, the chief of the wing. Dr. Akmal stated that given the current political climate in the country, it would be more beneficial to organize programs that serve the public’s interests. He emphasized that Umno Youth will be holding nationwide prayers and Quran reading sessions instead.
Emphasizing that Umno Youth is not involved in the “red or white shirt rally,” Dr. Akmal added that individuals are free to join if they wish. However, he will not issue an instruction for Youth members to participate.
The call for the “red shirts” rally came from Jamal, who is the Sungai Besar Umno chief, in response to the planned rally by Perikatan Nasional on September 16. Ahmad Fadhli Shaari, the Perikatan Youth chief, had previously announced that the wing would be organizing a rally in Kuala Lumpur to protest the withdrawal of corruption charges against Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. Ahmad Fadhli stated that the Malaysia Day rally is part of the Save Malaysia movement.
On September 12, Jamal urged the “red shirts” to take to the streets and counter the upcoming rally by Perikatan Nasional.
