Umno Youth is planning to launch a petition to seek justice for former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, according to its chief Datuk Dr Akmal Saleh. The petition aims to collect as many signatures as possible to support a request for a review of Najib’s case following the leak of an alleged internal Attorney General’s Chambers’ memo discussing charges against Najib and former Treasury secretary-general Tan Sri Irwan Serigar Abdullah. Umno Youth has already lodged police reports demanding an investigation into the leaked documents, but there has been no response from the Attorney General.
“If the memo is truly authentic, then we believe that Najib is really facing selective prosecution this time and is not getting the deserved justice,” said Akmal after chairing the wing’s exco meeting at Bangunan Dato’ Onn on September 12, Tuesday.
Furthermore, Akmal stated that the petition would be presented to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
In a viral copy of the alleged internal memo, the Ipic (International Petroleum Investment Company) case prosecution team expressed concern about the difficulty in building a strong prima facie case for the six charges against Najib and Irwan. The 12-page document was supposedly addressed to former attorney general Tan Sri Tommy Thomas. Najib and Irwan were jointly charged with six charges under Section 409 of the Penal Code for criminal breach of trust involving payments of RM6.6 billion in government funds to IPIC. The case was transferred to the High Court on December 7, 2018.
