Umno Youth intends to file police reports across the nation in order to prompt an immediate investigation, due to the Attorney General’s Chambers’ silence regarding an alleged internal memo. Umno Youth leader Dr Akmal Saleh stated that the leaked 12-page internal memo, supposedly from the AGC, advised against pursuing the 1MDB case against former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak. Although Attorney General Tan Sri Idrus Harun mentioned that an investigation would be carried out, it has not yet been confirmed if the memo is authentic. Dr Akmal expressed Umno Youth’s dissatisfaction, as there has been no response to the request to investigate the document and verify its contents.
In a statement on Friday (Sept 1), Dr Akmal said, “Umno Youth feels aggrieved because, until today, there has been no response to the demand for an investigation to be conducted to determine the authenticity of the document and its contents. On the basis of concern and adherence to the third and fourth Rukun Negara – the Supremacy of the Constitution and the Rule of Law – Umno Youth will mobilise its members throughout the country to make police reports so that an investigation can be carried out by relevant authorities and appropriate action taken to restore public confidence in the Malaysian legal system.”
The 12-page document, dated Sept 10, 2019, was allegedly addressed to former AG Tan Sri Tommy Thomas. According to the document, the International Petroleum Investment Company (IPIC) prosecution team expressed concern that a strong prima facie case could not be built for the six charges against Najib and former Treasury secretary-general Tan Sri Irwan Serigar, as filed at the Sessions Court in Kuala Lumpur on Oct 25, 2018. Both individuals were jointly charged with six counts under Section 409 of the Penal Code for CBT involving RM6.6 billion in government funds through payments to IPIC.
On Aug 17, Idrus Harun informed The Star that the AGC was investigating the matter, but did not confirm the authenticity of the memo. On Friday, Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali, Chief Secretary to the Government, announced that Datuk Ahmad Terrirudin Mohd Salleh would replace Idrus as the new AG on Sept 6.
“The AG’s action of announcing his holiday without providing the results of the investigation and proper response to the demands made by Umno Youth has left this issue hanging. This indirectly has a negative impact on the level of public confidence in the AGC,” Akmal added.
