KUALA NERUS: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), through its wholly-owned subsidiary UMT Jaya Holdings Sdn Bhd (UMTJ), is collaborating with the Fisheries Development Authority of Malaysia (LKIM) to further develop and advance the Malaysian fisheries industry.
Datuk Dr Din Adam, the chairman of UMTJ, mentioned that through this collaboration, the fisheries sector will be introduced and empowered with drone technology, Internet of Things (IoT) sensors, and applications (Super Apps) especially in the aspects of the environment, governance, safety, health and social for increased productivity.
He also stated that through this collaboration, both parties aim to be pioneers in the use of technology in the national fisheries sector, benefitting the fishing community.
He further mentioned, “The collaboration includes research, sharing of expertise, data and modern technology where the primary aim includes the development and sustainable management of the country’s fisheries for the benefit of the fishing community.”
At the same time, this initiative will enable UMTJ and LKIM to pioneer the production of “big data” and subsequently make more accurate analyses to be shared with the relevant parties, as mentioned by Din at the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signing ceremony between UMTJ and LKIM.
LKIM chairman Muhammad Faiz Fadzil and UMT vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mazlan Ghaffar were also present at the event.
Din further explained that this joint venture is expected to increase productivity by 30% and fishermen’s income by 25% in the next few years.
He emphasized, “The conventional methods used by fishermen today do not give them good returns,” highlighting the importance of improving their socio-economic status and not lagging behind in the current of modernity.” – Bernama
