KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin has called on the United Nations (UN) to intervene in Palestine and put an end to the atrocities committed by the Israeli regime. According to the opposition leader, the Malaysian government can propose this during the upcoming Asean-Gulf Cooperation Council Summit. He stated that Perikatan, his political party, urges the government to fully utilize the GCC for this purpose.
In his press conference at the Parliament lobby on Wednesday (Oct 18), Hamzah emphasized the need for immediate action following an Israeli air strike that killed 500 people at a hospital in Gaza on Tuesday (Oct 17). He suggested that the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) should proactively send peacekeepers to the Gaza borders. Hamzah also urged international leaders to collectively impose economic and legal sanctions against Israel.
According to Hamzah, the two billion Muslims worldwide possess significant economic power that could be utilized to pressure the Israeli regime and its allies. Therefore, he called on the Malaysian government to raise awareness among Muslim world leaders through the GCC, encouraging them to respond to the situation in Palestine.
Hamzah further criticized the leaders of the United States, United Kingdom, and France for displaying double standards. On Monday (Oct 16), they rejected Russia’s proposed cease-fire resolution between Israel and Hamas at the UN Security Council. In response, Hamzah stated that Perikatan will use all available channels and networks, including “people to people diplomacy,” to ensure that Palestine receives justice and assistance on all levels.
