In Ipoh, Datuk Rumaizi Baharin, the mayor, has stated that the damaged surface of the newly-constructed Meru Raya-Klebang connecting road is due to the flow of water underground.
He explained that the water flow has caused damage to the road’s subgrade and subbase, making it unable to withstand heavy loads and resulting in surface damage.
The issue was discovered in September, prompting remedial action by installing a subsoil drainage system in certain areas to redirect the underground water to the existing drainage system.

A second round of similar work was done in October at multiple locations, but heavy rain in early December caused the underground water flow to intensify, weakening the subgrade and subbase over a stretch of about 35 meters.
The engineering department of the city council has instructed the project consultant to conduct further studies and develop a comprehensive repair plan.
Rumaizi Baharin also mentioned that the road was finished in August, and the contractor will perform the repair work during the 12-month defect liability period.
