Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has emphasized that his government will protect the rights of all citizens, stating that Malaysia belongs to everyone. He believes that the nation’s unity is its strength and any efforts to weaken it should be rejected. Anwar made these remarks during his National Day address, warning against the dangers of racism and the negative consequences it can have on a nation’s progress.
Joining Anwar were his deputies, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, Cabinet ministers, and Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali.
Anwar acknowledged Malaysia’s diverse population and how it has contributed to shaping the country into what it is today. He stressed that differences should not be a source of division but rather an opportunity for strength and progress.
He further added, “We can choose to create unrest, doubt each other, and sow political and racial hatred, or we can choose to declare that enough is enough and work towards upholding the country’s dignity.”
Anwar also highlighted the importance of unity among the people, referring to the historical collaboration between Malays, Bumiputra, Chinese, Indians, Sabahans, and Sarawakians during the formation of Malaysia. He stated that Malaysia belongs to all its citizens and unity should remain a core value for the present and future generations.
In his address, Anwar paid tribute to the efforts of the security forces, recognizing their role in preserving peace and independence. He mentioned significant events, such as the Lahad Datu incursions in 2013, the Malaysia-Indonesia Confrontation, and the communist insurgency, where the security forces defended the nation.
Anwar believes that Merdeka, or Independence, goes beyond being free from foreign rule. He emphasized the need for the Malaysian people to develop a liberated spirit and mentality, where the country’s well-being and dignity are prioritized. He expressed confidence that with this mindset, Malaysia will emerge as a great and strong nation.
Finally, during the National Day celebration at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre, attendees including civil servants, students, youths, and representatives from non-governmental organizations showcased their patriotic spirit by singing national songs.
