Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has stated that the government’s current main focus is on eradicating hardcore poverty and ensuring that all schools have adequate facilities. He emphasized that the government’s spending would be based on this priority. Anwar highlighted the fact that the country’s debts have reached RM1.5 trillion due to borrowing from sources like the World Bank. This is in stark contrast to the surplus budgets of the 1990s when Anwar served as finance minister. Anwar also identified corruption and leakages as significant problems that need to be addressed.
Anwar expressed the government’s commitment to reviewing the salaries of public servants and lecturers next year. He noted that these salaries have not been reviewed for the past 12 years, even though they are supposed to be reviewed every 10 years. He further emphasized the need to improve housing quarters for police and army personnel, as certain locations have inadequate conditions.
During a dialogue session at UTM, Anwar addressed a student’s question regarding providing free laptops and devices to all STPM students, irrespective of their household incomes, to aid their studies. Anwar responded with a remark that elicited laughter from the audience, stating that such a move would bankrupt the country.
Anwar also underscored the significance of a strong and stable government in attracting investor confidence and encouraging investments in Malaysia.
