PETALING JAYA: The Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek has stated that upgrading and repair works in schools are carried out based on the schools’ own requests in their applications. She mentioned that the allocation provided to all schools under the ministry covers the maintenance of toilets and other facilities. This was her response to Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong (BN-Ayer Hitam) during the Dewan Rakyat session on September 19. Earlier, Dr Wee had raised questions and suggestions regarding the dire need for school upgrades.
In his recommendations, Dr Wee proposed that the RM1.4 billion allocation be used for all schools, regardless of their location or status. He also emphasized that priority should be given to schools that are deemed unsafe after verification by the Public Works Department, as well as schools with wiring issues that pose risks to students. He questioned the government’s plan for utilizing the RM1.4 billion allocation, particularly in rectifying the critical wiring system in schools.
Additionally, Dr Wee inquired about the allocation’s distribution method. He wanted to know whether the upgrading process will be directed through the state Education Department or the school management board. Fadhlina responded by stating that the channelling of allocations is primarily managed by the state Education Departments and district Education offices. However, she mentioned that the ministry is also considering alternative options.
She expressed that they are exploring ways to ensure that allocations are distributed through parent-teacher associations or school management boards. Fadhlina acknowledged the need to develop a monitoring mechanism for this channel to ensure proper implementation.
