JOHOR BAHRU: According to the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry (MOSTI), nuclear technology has the potential to enhance people’s quality of life in various ways. Datuk Dr Aminuddin Hassim, the secretary-general of MOSTI, highlighted that extensive research and development efforts have been undertaken to ensure the safe utilization of nuclear technology.
Dr. Aminuddin dismissed the misconception that nuclear energy is inherently dangerous, emphasizing that the technology is primarily intended for peaceful purposes and can benefit society in areas such as medicine and agriculture. He pointed out that nuclear technology can be applied to address various challenges, with MOSTI researchers actively contributing to solutions in the realm of food security.
Asserting the need to shift the negative perception surrounding nuclear technology, Dr. Aminuddin noted the launch of the National Nuclear Technology Policy 2030 in September. He revealed that MOSTI operates 21 service centers that leverage safe nuclear technology to provide solutions to diverse problems.
To raise awareness about their services, an outreach program organized by MOSTI utilizes the slogan ‘Nuklear Untuk Rakyat’ (Nuclear for the People) to engage with users across different zones. Malaysian Nuclear Agency’s director-general, Dr. Rosli Darmawan, underscored their agency’s role in conducting studies on nuclear technology’s application in areas like safety, environment, industry, and manufacturing.
Dr. Darmawan emphasized the importance of generating public interest in nuclear technology to enhance understanding of its significance in daily life.
