KOTA KINABALU: A fire broke out at the Kayu Madang landfill for a second time this year, billowing thick plumes of black smoke.

It is believed that the fire started at about 3pm on Wednesday (Oct 2).

Over 22 firemen in three fire trucks and two tankers from Kota Kinabalu and Tuaran stations were rushed to the scene to extinguish the fire.

“The operations are still underway, and we are working to prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent areas of the landfill,” said Tuaran Fire and Rescue Station chief Mohd Nor Amit at 6pm.

He said they used water jets and excavators to extinguish the fire.

On March 24, a secondary forest fire near the Kayu Madang landfill spread quickly to the used tyre dumpsite and was put out by March 29.

The fire also caused the air quality to become unhealthy in the Kota Kinabalu area.
