The Vape Consumers Association of Malaysia is opposing the Generational Endgame (GEG) Bill and calling for a separate regulatory framework for the vaping industry. In a statement on Friday (Oct 27), association president Tengku Aslahuddin Jaafar expressed concerns about the potential impact of the anti-smoking Bill on consumers, existing smokers, and the livelihood of Malaysians. The association argues for separate regulation for vaping due to the fundamental differences between vaping and traditional cigarettes. A complete ban on vaping within the GEG Bill may limit access to less harmful alternatives and impede efforts to combat the growing illicit tobacco trade in Malaysia.
Tengku Aslahuddin also highlighted the loss of revenue for the government due to illegal cigarettes, estimated at RM3.6 billion in 2021. He emphasized the role of the vape industry in creating employment opportunities, particularly among the bumiputra community, through thriving businesses that have generated thousands of jobs throughout the supply chain. According to Tengku Aslahuddin, a total vape ban could lead to thousands of individuals losing their jobs.
Therefore, Aslahuddin urged the government to reconsider the GEG Bill and establish a distinct regulatory framework for the vaping industry. Supporters of the GEG Bill, including consumer associations, non-governmental organizations, and anti-smoking groups, have been advocating for its passage in Parliament, despite several delays.
