The Agriculture and Food Security Minister of Malaysia, Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, has announced that Vietnam has expressed its willingness to continue exporting rice to Malaysia. He stated that Vietnam is ready to export rice to Malaysia at a negotiated price, which means a reasonable price in Malaysia, in case there is a need to increase rice imports from Vietnam. These statements were made during a bilateral meeting between Mohamad Sabu and Vietnam’s Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Nguyen Quoc Tri, on October 5, as part of the ongoing 45th Asean Ministers’ Meeting on Agriculture and Forestry (AMAF).
The 45th AMAF is taking place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, with the goal of strengthening Asean’s position as the food basket of the world and fostering closer cooperation among member countries to ensure food security in the Asean region. In addition to Malaysia, the event was attended by Singapore’s Minister of Sustainability and Environment, Grace Fu, and Asean secretary-general Dr. Kao Kim Hourn.
Mohamad Sabu also mentioned that during his meeting with Grace Fu, they discussed ways to increase agricultural trade between Malaysia and Singapore. On the other hand, Dr. Kao emphasized the need for improved Asean cooperation with other countries, such as China and India, in order to address the issue of food security.
