A 71-year-old Vespa enthusiast, Ramli Ahmad, is organizing a two-day gathering for vintage motorcycle fans in Alor Gajah, Malaysia. Ramli, who rode his Vespa scooter overland to Iran in 2013, wanted to bring together fellow enthusiasts to cherish these classical machines.
Ramli, from Pulau Sebang, embarked on a two-month long trip with his family, travelling across the international borders of four countries before reaching Iran. He spent most of his time in the southern part of India due to his fluency in the Tamil language.
Recently, Ramli visited the service centre of V.P Shanmugam, the Melaka youth, sports, and non-governmental organisations committee chairman, in Gadek to make arrangements for his upcoming event. The gathering will take place on August 5th and 6th at Bandar Satelit in Tampin.
Having owned his first Vespa in 1973, Ramli has since maintained the tradition of preserving these Italian-manufactured scooters. His passion for Vespas has been passed down to his seven sons, all of whom also own a Vespa.
Recalling his trip around the globe one decade ago, Ramli observed that there are still numerous hardcore fans of the classic Italian scooters in India and Pakistan. In the 1970s, Vespa was considered the ultimate status symbol for local bike aficionados. However, not many could afford to own the scooter then.
Aside from organizing the gathering, Ramli also operates a workshop in Pulau Sebang where he repairs Vespa and other motorcycles. As part of the event, he is offering one restored vintage Vespa as a grand prize during a lucky draw session.
“Vespas were the best gift Italy gave to the world, and I love these scooters,” Ramli expressed his adoration for the iconic brand.
