The public has been advised to be cautious when participating in activities that carry a risk of the water surge phenomenon as the North-East Monsoon season approaches. The Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) director-general, Datuk Seri Abdul Wahab Mat Yasin (pic), stated that the monsoon season, which will last from November to March, is predicted to have higher-than-usual rainfall. He identified seven hotspots in Perak where caution should be exercised: Sungai Bil Behrang, Sungai Dang, Sungai Kg Ruah Bt. 7, Sungai Lata Kijang, Sungai Lata Iskandar, Sungai Ulu Slim, and Sungai Trolak. These areas are particularly vulnerable to the water surge phenomenon.
In addition to water surge precautions, Abdul Wahab mentioned that JBPM will continue to promote public safety awareness, specifically focusing on fire safety. He further explained that the Local Government and Housing Ministry has introduced Malaysia Madani, a policy aimed at strengthening public safety education. One of the initiatives under this policy is the establishment of Fire Learning Hub Centers in fire stations across the country.
The introduction of Malaysia Madani and the establishment of Fire Learning Hub Centers were discussed and refined during the ministry’s Strategic Plan Refinement Workshop 2023-2025. Abdul Wahab highlighted the importance of public education in fire safety and emphasized the significance of these initiatives in achieving this goal.
On October 29, a Fire Safety Carnival was held in Perak, attended by over 4,000 visitors. The event featured various activities including a colouring contest, fire safety awareness talks and demonstrations, quizzes, and an exhibition. The carnival aimed to further educate the public on fire safety and raise awareness about the importance of taking necessary precautions in preventing fire-related incidents.
