The Selangor Islamic Department (MAIS) chairman, Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof, stated that political activists will not be permitted to teach religion in the state. He made this statement on Saturday (Oct 7) following the recognition of the High Court’s decision to cancel the revocation of a political activist’s permit to teach religion. However, MAIS stands by its decision on the credentials of preacher Abdullah Khairi. Abdul Aziz explained that the court decision only focused on the failure to follow proper procedures during the revocation and did not question the Selangor Sultan’s orders against political activists teaching religion in the state. As a result, the Selangor Sultan’s orders will continue to be enforced in Selangor state.
Abdul Aziz also addressed the revocation of the credentials of Abdullah Khairi and Ahmad Dusuki Abdul Rani. He stated that MAIS’s decision regarding Ahmad Dusuki is in line with the Sultan’s orders. The decision was based on information about his involvement in a political party and security information released by the police. Abdul Aziz mentioned that MAIS will not appeal the High Court’s decision because Dusuki’s credentials expired on June 30, 2023. The revocation was carried out based on the Credential Rules (Selangor) 2008, and credential holders have the option to appeal to MAIS.
In addition, Abdul Aziz called upon the public to refrain from further politicizing the matter and to respect the Palace’s decision. The Selangor Sultan’s decision to prohibit political activists from teaching religion in the state aims to prevent the misuse of credentials for the interests of political parties, potentially leading to conflicts among Muslims in the state. It is worth noting that Ahmed Dusuki, who was once fielded as a PAS candidate in the 14th general election, had his credentials revoked in 2022. Similarly, on September 27 this year, MAIS also decided to revoke Abdullah Khairi’s credentials due to his alleged political activism.
