PETALING JAYA: The President of the Olympic Council of Malaysia, Tan Sri Norza Zakaria, believes that the Malaysian government should seriously consider hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games. This suggestion comes after Victoria withdrew as the original host of the games, prompting the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) to extend the offer to Malaysia.
Norza disclosed that the offer includes a substantial financial investment of £100 million (RM602 million) to assist with the local organization and legacy planning of the 2026 edition. He stated, “CGA (Commonwealth Games Association) Malaysia and CGF have been in talks regarding the possibility of Malaysia hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games.”
“The last time Malaysia hosted the Commonwealth Games was in 1998, so CGA Malaysia believes that the Malaysian government should seize this unique opportunity, along with the associated support and financial backing, to build on the success of Kuala Lumpur 1998 and showcase Malaysia on the global sporting stage,” he added.
He emphasized that Malaysia’s existing world-class facilities make it well-suited to host an international event of Commonwealth significance involving 74 nations and territories. Norza also highlighted that hosting the games would require minimal government expenditure while bringing substantial socio-economic benefits to the country.
“It will also raise the level of Malaysian sports, similar to the impact seen after the 1998 Games,” he noted. “Therefore, the CGF and CGA Malaysia have presented an appealing proposal to the Malaysian government.”
