SEGAMAT: Norahimah Noor Muhammad, her husband, and four of their children were tragically killed in a road crash at KM5 of Jalan Segamat-Kuantan here. The last time Norahimah’s elder sister, Noorhayati Noor Muhammad, saw her was at their youngest sister’s wedding reception in Muar on Aug 27. During the reception, Norahimah jokingly mentioned taking a last photo of herself. Noorhayati describes Norahimah as a cheerful but strict person. The crash happened on Friday evening and involved six family members in a multipurpose vehicle (MPV) in a five-vehicle pile-up. Norahimah and her family were returning home from Ladang Tereh Utara, Kluang, to Felda Kemedak, Segamat. The remains of the six family members were laid to rest at the Ubudiah Islamic Cemetery, Parit Jawa.
Noorhayati learned about the road crash through television and newspapers but did not realize it involved her sister and family until she received WhatsApp messages. She expresses shock and states that it is the first time any of their family members have died in a road crash. Norahimah, her husband, and three of their children died at the scene, while one child died on the way to the hospital. Another child is in the intensive care unit. The eldest child did not join the trip.
The crash occurred when a trailer, loaded with sand, failed to stop in time and hit a sports utility vehicle (SUV) that had slowed down due to roadworks. As a result, the trailer entered the opposite lane and collided with the MPV carrying the family. Two other cars were also involved in the accident. The trailer driver sustained serious injuries, while the occupants of the SUV and the two cars escaped unharmed.
Supt Ahmad Zamry Marinsah, Segamat district police chief, is urging anyone with information on the incident to contact the Segamat Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division. The case is being investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. The Bandar Baru Segamat Fire and Rescue Station deployed two fire engines and an emergency medical rescue vehicle with 15 personnel to the scene. The operation concluded at 9.34pm.
