PETALING JAYA: Ayer Hitam MP Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong, a member of the Malaysian Parliamentary Select Committee on Infrastructure, Transport and Communications (JKPK IPK), has stated that Malaysia is studying best practices in disaster management from Japan. Dr Wee was part of a delegation that visited Japan and was impressed by the thorough planning of disaster relief efforts in the country. He mentioned that they had a courtesy call with Etoh Taku, chair of the special committee on disasters of Japan’s House of Representatives, where they studied Japan’s methods for rebuilding infrastructure after a disaster. Dr Wee emphasized the importance of learning from Japan’s resilience-building efforts to improve Malaysia’s preparedness for future incidents and mitigate the impacts on affected individuals. During the delegation’s visit, they also had a courtesy call with Japan’s newly-appointed State Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, Kokuba Konosuke. Dr Wee praised Japan’s city planning and public transportation systems after this meeting. He highlighted the success of Japan’s Shinkansen high-speed rail system, which has operated since 1964 without any fatalities. Dr Wee described the hour-long meeting as a privilege and an opportunity to study Japan’s smart city plans, public housing projects, and the Shinkansen. He commended Japan for incorporating elements of sustainable development and addressing future challenges in their initiatives. Dr Wee also noted that Japan’s deliberation process focuses not only on convenience but also on making public infrastructure more human-centric to enhance the quality of life for their citizens.
