KUALA LUMPUR: Following the passing of former governor and chief minister Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud, Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has vowed to continue the legacy of his predecessor, especially in the realm of developing Sarawak and Malaysia in a more structured manner.
Speaking at the signing ceremony of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between PETRONAS and the Sarawak government on Wednesday (Feb 21), Abang Johari expressed his commitment to carrying forward the efforts of development initiated by Abdul Taib.

He also noted Abdul Taib’s tenure as the minister of primary industries during the administration of the late Tun Abdul Razak and his successful efforts in strengthening the oil industry, ultimately leading to the establishment of PETRONAS. Abdul Taib passed away at the age of 87 in a hospital in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday morning.
Abang Johari also revealed that the MOU signed on Wednesday signifies a new collaboration between Sarawak, the Federal Government, and PETRONAS for the development of an ammonia factory for the international market.
