KOTA KINABALU: Following recent videos of crocodile sightings at Likas Bay, the Sabah Wildlife Department (SWD) is monitoring the sea in the area. One video shows a crocodile floating in the water near the Menara Kinabalu (PPNS) building, which houses the Chief Minister’s office and other government departments.

The state wildlife director, Augustine Tuuga, expressed uncertainty about the timing of the videos, as it is unclear if they were taken recently. According to Tuuga, picture reports of crocodiles in the same area were received around two years ago.

Tuuga also noted the difficulty of trapping crocodiles in the rough waters and the challenge of shooting them. Despite the department asking for reports of any crocodile sightings, they have not received any in the area since then.

While addressing the concerns of the public, Tuuga explained the department’s limited resources and the need for confirmed reports of recent crocodile sightings to prioritize their responses.

He also mentioned the department’s efforts in other districts to trap crocodiles, despite having a limited number of staff.
