IPOH: Comm Datuk Seri Hazani Ghazali has announced a 6.8% decrease in wildlife and environment-related cases this year. The Bukit Aman internal security and public order department director revealed that there were 192 cases recorded from January to September, down from 206 cases during the same period last year. Furthermore, there were 175 arrests made this year compared to 243 arrests last year.
During a press conference after an Operasi Bersepadu Khazanah meeting, Comm Hazani shared that seizures this year were valued at about RM40 million, whereas the total seizures last year amounted to around RM86 million. He regarded the decline in cases and increase in arrests and seizures as positive impacts towards conserving flora and fauna in the country.
The cases involved confiscated wildlife, animal parts, and forest treasures. Comm Hazani also mentioned that 56 investigation papers had been opened, of which 53 were already completed, leaving three still under investigation.
He emphasized that the police, Customs, Perhilitan, and other relevant agencies and NGOs will continue to uphold the Sustainable Development Goals under the 2030 Agenda to conserve and preserve the country’s natural treasures. Comm Hazani expressed concern about the consequences of not protecting wildlife, fearing that future generations may not even recognize a turtle. He assured that efforts will continue for the sake of the future generation.
