A woman and her two sons had to jump from the second floor of their house which caught fire in Sabah’s northern Kota Belud district early on Wednesday (July 26). As a result, the 46-year-old mother and her sons, aged 14 and six, suffered minor leg injuries in the incident at Kampung Sangkir. Kota Belud Fire and Rescue chief Muhammad Syazwan Latun said they were alerted to the fire at 1.40am. A team of eight firefighters and an Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) unit were deployed immediately. “The fire involved a two-storey house that was razed in the incident,” he said when contacted. He said the victims told firefighters they leapt from the burning house to save themselves. “Our EMRS unit administered first aid on the scene before rushing them to hospital,” Syazwan said. He said the fire was brought under control at about 3am, and the operation ended almost half an hour later. “We are still establishing the cause of the fire as well as assessing the losses,” he added.
In another fire, six interconnected workers’ quarters belonging to the Public Works Department (JKR) were destroyed at the Kota Marudu district, about 120km from here, on Tuesday (July 25) night. No one was reported injured in the 10.40pm incident at Jalan Korongkom. Kota Marudu Fire Station chief Mohd Hasbi Hajat said they received a distress call at 10.47pm. He said firefighters managed to bring the fire under control by 11.03pm. However, due to the extent of the fire, they were unable to save the property from being completely burnt down.
In an unrelated case, patients and staff of a rural clinic in east coast Semporna district were evacuated following an ammonia gas leak on Wednesday. A Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said they were informed of the leak at 11am. “The leak was detected in a medical freezer at Klinik Desa Tagasan. But there were no victims involved as the patients and medical staff evacuated the premises upon smelling gas,” he said when contacted. On reaching the scene, firefighters wearing gas masks proceeded to isolate the faulty equipment and carried out decontamination of the room, he added. “After ensuring there were no further health hazards, the team ended the operation at 1.25pm,” he said.
