A woman in Sibu has fallen victim to a phone scam and has been cheated of RM600,000. The 40-year-old female civil servant lodged a police report on September 12, claiming that she had been deceived by a phone scam syndicate. According to Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohd Azman Sapri’s statement, the woman received a call in early August from a man posing as a courier company representative from Perak. The man claimed that she had sent a parcel containing several identity cards, a claim she denied. The call was then redirected to someone pretending to be the Perak police station chief, who scolded her for not cooperating.

Afterward, the victim received a WhatsApp message from another scammer telling her that she was involved in money laundering. Panicked, the woman followed all the instructions given by the suspects and was even advised not to disclose anything to anyone. She proceeded to transfer RM20,000 to two bank accounts under the pretense of undergoing an “audit” by “Bank Negara.”

Soon after the initial transfer, the scammers demanded more money. In response, the victim withdrew her savings and took out bank loans, accumulating a total of RM580,000. This amount was transferred to five different bank accounts as instructed by the scammers. However, the woman only realized that she had been conned when the suspects became uncontactable.

The case is now under investigation for cheating under Section 420 of the Malaysian Penal Code.
