JOHOR BARU: Adie, a mother of three, passed away from suffocation after a fire broke out in three shophouses along Jalan Senyum in Kampung Wadi Hana on Wednesday, September 13.
Mohamad Faiz Suleiman, the operation commander at Larkin Fire and Rescue Station, reported that they received a distress call regarding the fire at 4.53am. He stated, “We immediately sent five Fire Rescue Tender (FRT) vehicles, three Emergency Medical Rescue Service (EMRS) units, three Rapid Intervention Motorcycle (RIM) units, a Pajero, and a Triton to the scene, along with 49 firemen. The assets and firemen are from Larkin, Tebrau, Johor Jaya, and Kempas fire stations.”
Mohamad Faiz mentioned that upon arrival, they encountered a significant fire engulfing three double-storey shophouses in the same row. The first shop, which contained five rented rooms, was 70% burnt, while the second shop, also with five rented rooms, was 90% burnt. He added, “The fire also caused approximately 65% damage to the third shophouse, which consists of a shop and three rented rooms.”
At around 5.20am, the firemen successfully rescued a family of four who were trapped inside one of the burning rooms. The family was immediately transported to Sultanah Aminah Hospital for medical treatment due to smoke inhalation. Unfortunately, the 53-year-old mother was pronounced dead by the hospital medical officer due to suffocation, while her three children, aged 21, 18, and 7, were in stable condition.
Mohamad Faiz stated that the operation concluded at approximately 9.25am, while the cause of the fire and estimated loss are still under investigation.
Meanwhile, Asst Comm Raub Selamat, the South OCPD of Johor Baru, confirmed that the affected family were foreigners.
