A woman in Kota Kinabalu has finally had a tumour removed from her cheek after it had been growing for the past eight years. Nur Patma Jimlani was diagnosed with pleomorphic adenoma eight years ago, a non-cancerous tumour that develops on the salivary glands. Initially starting as a small bump, the tumour gradually grew bigger and reached a weight of 1kg, hindering her daily activities.
The Lahad Datu Hospital decided to schedule a surgery to remove the tumour, and a team of specialists from Sandakan, Kota Kinabalu, Keningau, and Lahad Datu performed the three-hour procedure to remove the 1.03kg growth.
Dr Rubinderan Muthusamy, a mouth and maxillofacial specialist, explained that if left unattended, the tumour could have caused future health complications for the patient in addition to the physical challenges she was already facing. These complications could have included difficulty turning her head, pain in her neck and other parts of her head, breathing difficulties, and blood vessel blockage. Dr Rubinderan also noted that the patient could have suffered from psychological problems.
The removal of the tumour is reportedly one of the largest facial tumours ever removed in the country.
