KUALA NERUS: The National Registration Department (NRD) has discovered that there are approximately 8,000 cases of lost identity cards (MyKad) occurring annually throughout the country in the past five years, according to its director-general Zamri Misman. While this number only accounts for four per cent of the 200,000 MyKad applications received each year, it is still a concerning situation.

Zamri explained that the most common reasons provided for the loss of MyKad are misplacement or negligence. Many individuals tend to leave their MyKads in random places when they go on vacation or simply misplace them. This is a worrying trend, as losing one’s MyKad not only incurs a fine of up to RM1,000 but also exposes individuals to the risk of identity theft.

Therefore, Zamri urged the public to be cautious and take good care of their MyKads. In cases of loss, he advised individuals to report to the police immediately. He also emphasized the importance of notifying the NRD so that they can provide assistance. Zamri expressed concerns about the potential misuse of lost MyKads by unauthorized individuals.

During the Mekar programme held in Kampung Telaga Daing, Abdul Wahab Saleh, a 71-year-old citizen with disabilities in the slow learner category, received his MyKad directly from Zamri. Zamri shared that Abdul Wahab had previously only possessed a birth certificate and hadn’t applied for a MyKad because no one had helped him. As a consequence, Abdul Wahab faced difficulties in accessing medical treatment and support from the Social Welfare Department.

Zamri added that Abdul Wahab, who is unmarried and has no permanent residence, applied for his identity card in May with the assistance of his nephew. This enabled him to receive the necessary medical care and gain access to the support he needed.

“We are committed to assisting those who have lost their MyKads. It is imperative that they report the loss to the police and visit the NRD as soon as possible so that we can help them. Our primary concern is to prevent the misuse of these important documents,” Zamri stated.
