KOTA KINABALU: Datuk Seri Yong Teck Lee has suggested that the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) government establish a committee to reclaim Labuan from the Federal Government. The president of the Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) argued that the return of Labuan to Sabah was unavoidable. He claimed that this was due to the Federal Government’s failure to fulfill its promises to Sabah and Labuan when Labuan was federalized in 1984.

“I have already proposed to the ruling GRS government to create a ‘technical committee on the return of Labuan to Sabah’,” added Yong, who is also a GRS deputy chairman. He stated that bringing Labuan back to Sabah would place the island within Sabah’s domestic immigration zone. This would mean that travelers between Sabah and Labuan, whether by sea or air, will not have to go through immigration controls.

Yong also mentioned that only travel to and from Sarawak, Peninsular Malaysia, and international destinations would be subject to immigration control. By reclaiming Labuan, Sabah could streamline travel between the island and the mainland. Additionally, Yong highlighted the benefits of having Labuan under Sabah’s jurisdiction, such as easier movement for residents and visitors.

Labuan’s return to Sabah has the potential to enhance the overall efficiency of travel and trade in the region. With Labuan back within Sabah’s control, the state could have more autonomy over its territories and resources. This move could also strengthen Sabah’s position as an important economic hub in Malaysia.

Yong emphasized the importance of fulfilling the historical agreement between Sabah and Labuan, stressing the need for Labuan to be reunited with Sabah. The establishment of a committee dedicated to this cause would signify the government’s commitment to addressing this longstanding issue.

By advocating for the return of Labuan to Sabah, Yong hopes to address the challenges faced by residents and businesses on the island. This initiative could potentially pave the way for a more cohesive and integrated system between Sabah and Labuan, benefiting both regions in terms of economic development and connectivity.

Reclaiming Labuan would not only simplify travel logistics but also strengthen the bonds between Sabah, Labuan, and the rest of Malaysia. This move could lead to a more harmonious and efficient administration of the territories, ultimately benefiting the people and economy of the region.
