KUALA LUMPUR: Muhammed Yusoff Rawther, 31, was charged in the Magistrate’s Court here on Wednesday (Oct 9) for possessing two fake guns.
Sinar Harian reported that the former research assistant to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim pleaded not guilty after the charges were read before Magistrate S Mageswary.
According to the charges, two weapons were found on him near a condominium in Jalan Bukit Kiara here on Sept 6 at 9.25am.
The charge was made under Section 36(1) of the Arms Act 1960, which carries a maximum prison sentence of one year or a fine not exceeding RM5,000 or both if convicted.
During the proceedings, Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohd Sabri Othman suggested setting Muhammed Yusof’s bail at RM20,000 with a local surety.
Meanwhile, the lawyer, Nurmustanir Md Nor, who represented the accused, did not make any appeal as Muhammed Yusoff was still being held on remand for the drug trafficking case.
After hearing the application from both parties, Mageswary did not allow any bail and fixed Nov 12 for the re-mention of the case.
On Sept 12, Muhammed Yusof was charged in the Magistrate’s Court here on one charge of distributing cannabis-type drugs weighing 305g in the vehicle he was riding in in front of the Kuala Lumpur Contingent Police Headquarters surau on Sept 6 at 10.15am.
However, no confession was recorded from the accused, as the case was under the jurisdiction of the High Court.
He was charged under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and can be punished under Section 39B(2) of the same act, which carries life imprisonment and must also be whipped with not less than 12 lashes.
Previously, Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa confirmed Muhammed Yusoff’s arrest.
