Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has dismissed the claim made by PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang that Perikatan Nasional could take over the Federal Government if the coalition wins the six state polls. Ahmad Zahid stated that Abdul Hadi should understand the basic concept of federal and state administrations. He pointed out that the unity government currently holds 148 parliamentary seats in the Dewan Rakyat, and the results of the six state polls would only have an impact on the respective states, not the Federal Government.
“How will they (Perikatan) take over Putrajaya? We have 148 seats and even if they win, it will be at the state level, which means they have no right to take over (Putrajaya).
This is not about a referendum. This is about state elections, not a general election, and thus has nothing to do with the Federal Government,” Ahmad Zahid explained to reporters after launching the Desa Cerdas Kemas programme in Ayer Lanas.
Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Barisan Nasional chairman and Bagan Datuk MP, concluded that Abdul Hadi’s claim has no basis.
On Sunday, Abdul Hadi had asserted that Perikatan’s victory in the upcoming state elections on August 12 would pave the way for the coalition to take over the Federal Government.
During his speech at the Desa Cerdas Kemas programme, Ahmad Zahid emphasized that the unity government has consistently acknowledged the rights of Kelantan. He added that the programmes implemented by the government have not been empty promises and have yielded real benefits for the people.
“Everyone can witness the government’s commitment and efforts to assist the people, including those in rural and interior areas, despite the very challenging economic situation.
I urge everyone to see for themselves and think rationally about the ability and capability of the unity government,” Ahmad Zahid concluded.
