Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has made history by attending DAP’s annual conference, marking the first time a leader from Umno has participated in the event. This signifies a significant development in the longstanding rivalry between the two parties. Joining him were Barisan secretary-general Datuk Seri Zambry Abdul Kadir and Umno Secretary-General Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, all dressed in Barisan’s signature blue uniforms. Their entrance on Sunday (Sept 10) was met with enthusiastic cheers and applause from the hundreds of DAP delegates present.
A photograph taken during the event shows Ahmad Zahid receiving a warm welcome from DAP Secretary-General Anthony Loke and Chairman Lim Guan Eng. His presence was as a guest of honor, having been invited by DAP.
The participation of Ahmad Zahid and other top Umno leaders marks a significant shift in the usual dynamics between Umno and DAP. Since DAP’s establishment in 1965, the two parties have been bitter rivals. However, their relationship experienced a turning point in November last year after the formation of the unity government following the 15th general election.
DAP extended invitations to all parties under the unity government for their annual conference, with the notable absence of Muda. Among the prominent leaders spotted at the event were PKR vice-president Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, PKR deputy president Mohd Rafizi Ramli, and Amanah president Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu.
