The need for fundamental reforms is strengthened by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) for the 47 graft charges involving Yayasan Akalbudi funds, according to Wong Chen.
The Subang MP expressed that the main objective is to pass laws in Parliament that allow independent bodies like the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and Attorney General (AG) to function without political interference.
On social media platform X on Tuesday (Sept 5), he stated, “In particular, the Attorney General and Solicitor General’s offices need to be separated, with the AG acting as the chief advisor to the government on commercial, civil, and international trade matters, while the Solicitor General oversees an independent public prosecution body that is solely accountable to Parliament.”
Wong also emphasized that senior appointments in the MACC should be vetted by Parliament and all its activities should be held accountable to the legislative body.
“These two reforms are crucial. We need to act swiftly and pass the necessary legislation within the next 12 months.
As a government MP, I will continue to strive for my government to successfully implement these reforms.
He added, “When these laws are enacted, we may witness the beginning of the end of political influence in anti-corruption matters.”
These remarks were made following the Kuala Lumpur High Court’s decision to grant Ahmad Zahid a DNAA on Monday (Sept 4).
