PETALING JAYA: A state law that gives the state government the right to decide on the lives of Muslims or their dress code is unconstitutional, says Datuk Zaid Ibrahim (pic).
The former law minister had taken Terengganu youth and sports committee chairman Hishamuddin Abdul Karim to task for his outrage at two Muslim girls representing the state in diving at the recent Malaysia Games (Sukma).
The Tepuh assemblyman had claimed that the athletes’ attire violated the state sports council’s dress code for Muslim athletes.
Zaid said Muslim religious authorities have gone overboard to interfere in the lives of Muslims in the country.
“The PAS man should be proud that the two girls have excelled in the sport and should have congratulated them, instead of expressing shame,” Zaid said in a post on X, responding to Hishamuddin’s comments.
“The two girls have parents who are their legal guardians, and if they have no objection, who is the exco man to decide for the girls?” he asked.
Zaid hoped other sensible religious leaders would speak out to defend the liberties of Muslims to live their lives as they see fit.
“It’s about time Muslim parents stand up to protect their children’s rights without being cowed by politicians,” Zaid added.
