With just one round of games left in the group stage of the Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, the fate of various teams hangs in the balance. Barça players have generally performed well so far, but some still need to secure their spot in the knockout stage.
Switzerland and Norway: All to play for
Switzerland, led by Crnogorčević, have earned 4 points from their matches against the Philippines and Norway. A win or draw against host nation New Zealand would guarantee their place in the next round. They might even qualify if they lose by a small margin, depending on the result of the other match.
Norway, on the other hand, only a victory against the Philippines will suffice after losing to New Zealand and drawing with Switzerland. Even then, their qualification would rely on goal difference.
Nigeria: In their own hands
Nigeria, including Oshoala, drew with Canada and upset host nation Australia. They are currently in pole position in Group B. A draw against Ireland would be sufficient for them to advance. However, even if Ireland wins, Nigeria could still qualify if the result of the other match goes their way.
Spain: Job done
The Spanish team, boasting the most Barça players, has already secured qualification by defeating Costa Rica and Zambia. They still have a chance to clinch top spot in the group in their head-to-head match against Japan, with a draw being enough to achieve that.
England: Almost there
England, featuring Keira Walsh and Lucy Bronze, have won their first two games 1-0. However, they still need at least a draw against China in their final match to mathematically secure qualification as group winners. If they lose, a three-way tie between England, China, and Denmark could potentially occur, with the team having the weakest goal difference facing elimination.
Sweden and Italy: One through, one still in contention
Sweden, led by Fridolina Rolfö, have already secured their spot in the next stage after a dominant 5-0 victory over Italy. With their strong goal difference, they are likely to top the group. Italy, despite their defeat to Sweden, still have a chance to advance. A victory against South Africa would guarantee their qualification, and a draw would suffice as long as Argentina fails to beat Sweden.
Brazil: Needing to win
Brazil missed their chance to secure qualification in their loss to France. However, a victory against bottom side Panama would keep Geyse and her team in the tournament. A draw might also be enough, but it is not guaranteed.
