Erik ten Hag has privately conveyed to Harry Maguire his desire for him to stay at Manchester United, as reported by talkSPORT. Maguire, who was recently stripped of the captaincy by the determined Dutchman, faces uncertainty regarding his future at Old Trafford. Last season, the 30-year-old only started in the Premier League eight times, finding himself as the fifth choice in the team hierarchy. Despite links to West Ham, Newcastle, and Chelsea, Maguire remains calm about his situation and has stated his commitment to the team. TalkSPORT host Sam Matterface said, “I think he’s pretty relaxed about the fact if he’s told by Manchester United he wants to leave, there will be people who come in for him. Chelsea need a new centre-back and [Mauricio] Pochettino likes English players. Newcastle and West Ham have also shown some interest.”
Maguire recently engaged in private discussions with the Manchester United manager. Matterface revealed, “I understand that Erik ten Hag has told him privately that he doesn’t want him to leave, he just wants to pick his own captain. If you don’t come out and say that to the general public, everybody believes that by taking away the captaincy then you are saying the complete opposite.” While Maguire is eager to play, he remains open to the possibility of leaving if Manchester United makes it clear they no longer require his services. Matterface expressed, “After all, the Euros are around the corner and this guy has been the centerpiece to the England defense for six years. He’s not going to give that up without a fight.” Furthermore, the host emphasized the importance of the manager publicly affirming Maguire’s value to the squad.
