PUTRAJAYA – In a significant development, former 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) lawyer Jasmine Loo Ai Swan (pictured) was apprehended by the police on Friday (July 7) to aid in the investigation of funds misappropriation. The Home Minister, Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, confirmed the arrest, stating that Loo was taken into custody at the Dang Wangi district police Headquarters (IPD) in Kuala Lumpur and was subsequently remanded on Saturday.
According to the Home Minister, Loo has expressed her willingness to cooperate with the police investigation into the 1MDB case, as per Section 409 of the Penal Code. However, no further details, including the duration of her remand, have been disclosed at this time.
“Loo will wholeheartedly assist the police and the Malaysian government in unraveling the intricacies of the 1MDB case,” said the Home Minister.
Previously, on January 20, the Kuala Lumpur High Court approved the prosecution’s forfeiture of two luxury cars and RM22,600 in cash belonging to Loo, based on Section 56 of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorist Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities (AMLATFPUAA) Act 2001.
In addition, the court granted OCBC Bank (M) Bhd the right to claim a seized condominium unit in Mont Kiara, which belonged to Loo.
The prosecution had earlier submitted a motion in November 2021, seeking the forfeiture of two cars (an Audi and a Volkswagen New Beetle), cash valued at RM22,600, and the aforementioned condominium unit from Loo.
It’s worth noting that Loo is reputedly closely associated with fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho or Jho Low, who was also intricately involved in the 1MDB financial scandal. Jho Low is currently wanted by authorities and remains at large.

On December 4, 2018, the Magistrate’s Court issued arrest warrants against Jho Low, Loo, former 1MDB executive director Casey Tang Keng Chee, former 1MDB official Geh Choh Heng, and Jho Low’s close associate Eric Tan Kim Loong. They were charged with seven counts of money laundering related to 1MDB but failed to appear in court.
