Renowned BBC journalist Huw Edwards is reportedly retiring due to “serious health issues”, according to his wife, Vicky Flind. Flind stated that Edwards has taken a leave of absence after experiencing recent difficulties and expressed concerns about his brain health, as well as his ability to care for their children. The Sun newspaper in England published an article claiming that a family member had leaked explicit images of Edwards. The police have stated that no further action will be taken. In a statement from his family, it was announced that Edwards intends to return to address what has happened to him once he has made a full recovery. The statement read, “Due to the recent reports regarding the BBC journalist, I, Huw Edwards, would like to confirm that I have been the victim of a series of intrusions into my personal life and well-being.” Edwards has been battling significant brain health issues. As previously reported, in the past few years, he has dealt with severe health concerns, and he is currently undergoing treatment in a specialist facility. “I have suffered greatly in recent weeks, and now I am preparing to face a prolonged period of rehabilitation.” The police in the United Kingdom released a statement in response to the family’s announcement, stating, “The police understand the details disclosed in the media regarding reference to a BBC journalist, and can confirm steps have been taken in the past few weeks following conversations with senior executives at the BBC. “In reaching this decision, we have consulted a wide range of parties, including the BBC and other parties, and concluded that no crime has been committed. “The police would like to assure those affected by the events that there is no indication that any wrongdoing has occurred. “During this process, we have engaged with the police’s professional standards department and satisfied ourselves that no officer is implicated in any wrongdoing.” The BBC announced that it will continue to “seek answers” about what has happened to its journalist. This statement comes after the British police launched an investigation into alleged inappropriate conduct by someone aged 17. The individual who provided the Sun newspaper with the information is the mother of the person involved, together with her husband, who is not the person in question. In the letter sent in their names, both referred to the claims as “malicious.” Previously, South Wales police in England had informed the family of the person involved that no criminal actions had taken place following initial discussions with BBC executives and following conversations with the Sun newspaper. In another statement on Wednesday, the police stated that no crime had been committed given the sudden developments of new information. On Tuesday, the BBC announced the suspension of a person in their 20s after being contacted by a 20-year-old who raised concerns about being sent intimidating and fearful messages by the journalist. The Sun reported on further news, claiming that the journalist had violated stay-at-home regulations during the Covid pandemic in February 2021 by having someone in their 20s visiting his home. The newspaper claimed that the journalist sent the person “extremely graphic” messages. The Sun noted that this story relates to a conversation (chat) on Instagram between the journalist and a 17-year-old, where the journalist sent a number of heart emojis. The BBC has not been able to authenticate the message. A spokesperson for The Sun said they had “no agenda” against Edwards and that they would cooperate with the BBC’s investigation. The Sun’s statement read, “The Sun has tried to be extremely fair regarding these issues. It should be noted that other matters have been reported on in recent days…”The Sun will cooperate with the BBC. We will provide them with further news on this matter, which is very extensive for us, including some material given to us by BBC staff.” The Sun reported that Edwards had contacted a person to provide him with explicit photos when that person was 17 years old. It is not clear whether these alleged actions were illegal. People under 18 fall within the category of children under the law in terms of explicit images. Above, where these details were released, they were misused. The legal age of consent for sexual activity (to avoid it being recorded as a crime) is 16. After the publication of this news, The Sun withdrew its comments about the journalist, as it became “understood that the conversation between the relatives began when the person involved was underage.” Despite the serious allegations and subsequent media coverage, the announcements – including those from BBC News – initially referred to the journalist by name due to concerns about his overall well-being and personal privacy.
