India’s star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is set to make a comeback to competitive cricket as he captains the Indian team in its upcoming three-match T20I series against Ireland. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a 16-member squad on Monday.
Bumrah, who last played for the national side in September 2022, has been sidelined due to a back fracture. The 29-year-old’s return to full fitness will be crucial for India’s preparations for the ODI World Cup, which is scheduled to begin in October.
This will be the first time that Bumrah will lead the Indian team in a limited-overs series. Ruturaj Gaikwad has been named as his deputy, as he prepares to captain the team in the upcoming Asian Games. The selectors have decided to rest all of the senior team members, considering the Asia Cup is set to begin just a week after the Ireland series.
