Isabela Merced, Edi Gathegi, and Nathan Fillion have been cast as iconic superheroes in the upcoming film, Superman Legacy, which aims to breathe new life into the DC Universe. Isabela Merced will portray Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi will take on the role of Mister Terrific, and Nathan Fillion will embody a Green Lantern character that may differ from the one commonly associated with the role.
Directed and written by James Gunn, Superman Legacy has already cast David Corenswet as Clark Kent and Rachel Brosnahan from The Marvellous Mrs. Maisel as Lois Lane. Filming is set to commence in January 2024 and will lay the groundwork for the new DC Universe (DCU) envisioned by James Gunn in collaboration with Peter Safran, the chair and CEO of DC Studios.
Recently, it was announced that Isabela Merced, known for her roles in Sicario: Day of the Soldado and Dora and the Lost City of Gold, will join DC Studios as Hawkgirl. In the new universe, Hawkgirl is a winged warrior who wields melee weapons like swords, spears, and maces. Merced’s height of 5-foot-1 will bring a unique physicality to the role.
Furthermore, Edi Gathegi, recognized for his performances in the Twilight movies and X-Men: First Class, will portray Mister Terrific, also known as Michael Holt. Mister Terrific is not only a formidable combatant but also an inventive genius and strategist. Armed with his T-Sphere weapons, he uses his exceptional intellect as one of his superpowers. Gathegi’s character wears a jacket bearing the phrase “Fair Play,” paying homage to a previous version of Mister Terrific and reflecting his personal values.
Nathan Fillion, who previously collaborated with James Gunn in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, will reunite with the director in Superman Legacy as Green Lantern character Guy Gardner. Fillion will sport the iconic bowl cut from the comics.
Superman: Legacy is scheduled for release on July 11, 2025 and is positioned as a crucial project in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new strategy to revitalize the DCU.
