Hollywood actor Joaquin Phoenix, famous for his role as the Joker, is taking on the character of Napoleon Bonaparte in the upcoming film “Napoleon.” The movie is set to be released in theaters on Nov. 22, according to a report by The Hollywood Reporter. Directed by Ridley Scott, the film also features Ben Miles, Matthew Needham, Rupert Everett, and others.
The first official trailer for “Napoleon” was released on Monday by Sony Picture Entertainment. The trailer showcases intense battle sequences and scenes depicting the chaos of the French Revolution. In the trailer, Napoleon declares, “I’m the first to admit when I make a mistake. I simply never do.” The film explores Napoleon’s rise to power and his ambition to conquer the world, while also delving into his relationship with Josephine, played by Vanessa Kirby.
“Napoleon” has been given an R-rating for strong violence, grisly images, sexual content, and brief language. After its theatrical release, the film will be available for streaming on AppleTV+, according to Deadline.
Ridley Scott, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, praised Joaquin Phoenix, stating, “No actor could ever embody Napoleon like Joaquin. He created one of movie history’s most complex Emperors in ‘Gladiator,’ and we’ll create another with his Napoleon.” Scott and Phoenix previously collaborated on the film “Gladiator,” where Phoenix played the character of the emperor Commodus.
Who is Napoleon Bonaparte?
Napoleon Bonaparte was born on Aug. 15, 1769, on the island of Corsica, which had recently been conquered by France. He grew up on Corsica and moved to mainland France at the age of 9. Napoleon attended school and later joined the École Militaire, a military school, where he rose through the ranks.
Napoleon’s ascent to power coincided with the French Revolution. He forged relationships with democratic groups such as the Jacobins and played a part in suppressing royalist insurrections. In 1799, he orchestrated a coup that ended the French government, becoming the first consul of France. Napoleon went on to implement reforms and establish the Napoleonic Code, a landmark in French legal history. He was eventually crowned emperor in 1804.
Throughout his reign, Napoleon expanded his empire through military conquests, winning territories in Italy and Germany. However, his success was met with opposition, and he faced defeat in 1813 at the hands of the Sixth Coalition. This defeat marked a turning point in Napoleon’s rule, and he was ultimately forced into exile on the island of St. Helena.
