Young defender Jurrien Timber, who started his career at Ajax, has achieved his long-held ambition of joining Arsenal. Timber, who recently showcased his talents while representing Ajax and the Dutch national team, becomes the second signing of the summer for Arsenal.
When asked about his aspirations five years ago, Timber expressed his desire to play for the Ajax first team before eventually moving to either England or Spain. It was no secret that his admiration for Arsenal ran deep, as he has always been a fan of the club.
In an interview, Timber explained, “My love for Arsenal stems from my brothers who have always been devoted fans. I’ve been captivated by watching Arsenal play, their style, and the presence of exceptional players in the team. The club has a special place in my heart.”
“Since I was young, my brothers instilled this love for Arsenal in me. I particularly enjoyed watching Robin van Persie and Thierry Henry, who were my favorite players,” Timber added.
The 22-year-old defender, who made over 120 appearances for Ajax’s first team in the past three years, arrives at Arsenal with an emerging reputation and is thrilled to embark on his first venture outside of Dutch football.
“Only a few players have made the move from Ajax to Arsenal, so it feels incredible to be here and be recognized by such a prestigious club,” Timber stated. “I’m genuinely excited, especially now that I’m here. Everyone has been incredibly welcoming, and it’s evident that this is a massive club. I can’t wait to play for this beautiful club and experience the electrifying atmosphere of the fans in the stadium.”
Comfortable in both central defense and the right-back position, Timber has no preference for his role and believes his playing style aligns well with Arsenal’s and the Premier League’s demands.
“I consider myself fortunate that I can play both as a central defender and a right full-back, and at times even in midfield,” Timber explained. “This versatility is an advantage that I need to maintain. Arsenal’s style of play, akin to Ajax’s, where we build from the back, resonates with me. There are clear similarities in how Arsenal and Ajax approach the game.”
