Tesla to Establish Headquarters in Selangor, Malaysia, Confirms Anwar Ibrahim
The Malaysian Prime Minister, Anwar Ibrahim, recently engaged in discussions with billionaire tech magnate Elon Musk regarding potential investments in the Southeast Asian region. During a virtual meeting that lasted 25 minutes, Anwar and Musk covered various topics including the launch of Tesla, the electric carmaker, and Starlink, Musk’s satellite internet service.
Anwar expressed his enthusiasm at the company’s interest in Malaysia as well as Musk’s willingness to come to the country. He confirmed that Tesla would be establishing its headquarters in Selangor, the state surrounding the capital city of Kuala Lumpur, later this year.
In a recent tweet, Tesla announced the sale of their models in Malaysia starting from July 20. The approval granted by the authorities to import vehicles paved the way for this decision. Notably, the company also revealed that the Model Y car is now available for order in the country.
Anwar emphasized Malaysia’s commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050 and highlighted the country’s comprehensive plan and resources to support the clean energy industry, particularly in regard to electric mobility.
Aside from the Tesla launch, Anwar and Musk also explored the potential of Starlink in Malaysia. They discussed how this satellite internet service could significantly enhance internet connectivity, especially in rural areas, thereby improving aspects such as education, agricultural technology, and income generation.
