Former Manchester United and Ajax star Edwin van der Sar rushed to hospital after suffering a cerebral haemorrhage.
Edwin van der Sar, the legendary goalkeeper, has been hospitalized after experiencing a stroke while vacationing on a Croatian island. He had to be airlifted to the hospital, as reported by De Telegraaf.
Van der Sar was admitted to intensive care on Friday afternoon.
Ajax, his former club, showed their support for him on Twitter, stating: “On Friday, Edwin van der Sar had a bleeding around his brain.
“He’s currently in hospital in the intensive care unit and is in a stable condition. Once there is more concrete information, an update will follow.
“Everyone at Ajax wishes Edwin a speedy recovery. We’re thinking of you.”
Van der Sar, aged 52, who achieved Champions League triumphs with Ajax and Manchester United, recently stepped down as CEO of the Dutch giants. He initially joined his former team as marketing director back in 2012 and was later promoted to the position of chief executive four years later.
Manchester United released the following statement on Friday evening: “We at Manchester United are keeping Edwin van der Sar and his family in our thoughts after learning about the serious illness that has befallen this revered goalkeeper.
“Edwin is always warmly welcomed whenever he visits Old Trafford, as he was one of the most popular and successful goalkeepers in the club’s history. From June 2005 until his retirement from football in May 2011, at the age of 40, he made a total of 266 appearances and played a vital role in the club’s attainment of four Premier League titles, the Champions League, and the Club World Cup, among other trophies under the guidance of Sir Alex Ferguson.
“Everyone at United joins our friends at Ajax in wishing Edwin a complete and speedy recovery.”
