Cristiano Ronaldo achieved another milestone in his career as his team Al Nassr emerged victorious with a 4-1 win against US Monastir in a game of the Arab Club Champions Cup at the King Fahd International Stadium in Riyadh on Tuesday.
In the 74th minute, Ronaldo made an impact with a precise header, surpassing Gerd Muller’s previous record of 144 goals to become the highest-ever goalscorer with 145 headed goals in football history.
Not only was this a historical moment for Ronaldo, but it also marked Al Nassr’s first win of the tournament this season. Their previous match ended in a goalless draw against Al-Shabab.
Al Nassr began the match on the offensive, led by former Inter Milan stalwart Marcelo Brozovic and former Lens captain Seko Fofana.
The breakthrough came in the 42nd minute when Abdulrahman Ghareeb received a long ball from Brozovic along the left flank and set up Anderson Talisca to score the opening goal.
However, a defensive mistake by Al Nassr’s Ali Lajami resulted in an own goal, leveling the score six minutes later.
Ronaldo then stepped up and scored his 839th career goal, creating a record-breaking moment that sent the stadium into a frenzy.
Following Ronaldo’s goal, Al Nassr dominated the game, with Abdulelah Al-Amri and Abdulaziz Saud Al Elewai each scoring a goal in the final minutes.
This victory propelled Al Nassr to the top of its group in the King Salman Club Cup, tied on points with Al Shabab but leading on goal difference.
The outcome of the game was significant for Ronaldo’s side, which has had a mixed performance against European teams, including two heavy defeats against Benfica and Celta Vigo.
On the contrary, Monastir now sits at the bottom of the table, being the only team in their group without a single point. In the last round of group-stage matches, Al Nassr will face Egyptian side Zamalek SC, while Monastir will face Al Shabab.
