A group of NGOs says threats and violence against activists, similar to the incident involving Siti Kasim’s car, have become prevalent recently.

PETALING JAYA: Over 50 civil society organizations have expressed their support for lawyer and human rights activist Siti Kasim and condemned the individuals behind the recent bomb incident targeting her car. The incident occurred yesterday.

The groups have also called on the police to ensure Siti’s safety by providing her with security.

In a statement issued today, the groups stated that Siti is a lawyer who defends indigenous rights and is known for her sensitivity, proactivity, and outspokenness on various human rights issues, institutional integrity, democracy, and political matters. They noted that her critical thinking and progressive stance have made her a target.

Expressing concern, the groups highlighted the increasing prevalence of threats and violence against activists in recent times.

They stated, “It seems that when you hold a differing opinion, you become the target of bullying through force. If the authorities do not take decisive action against this violence, public peace, security, and the principles of the rule of law and democracy will be jeopardized.”

The groups urged the Ministry of Home Affairs to collaborate with civil society and the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia to find a solution that ensures the safety and freedom of expression for individuals, while preventing this trend from becoming the norm.

The statement further urged the police to initiate a transparent investigation without delay and take appropriate action, including holding the perpetrators accountable. Additionally, the government was urged to recognize the role of human rights defenders.

The groups stressed that individuals should not have to tolerate threats, intimidation, or any form of violence simply for exercising their rights and freedom of expression protected by the Federal Constitution.
