An environmentally conscious Redditor found an unlikely ally in their efforts to reduce waste: their local Starbucks.

Sharing their experience on the popular r/ZeroWaste subreddit, which is dedicated to minimizing environmental impact, the Redditor showcased how Starbucks played a role in their eco-friendly habits.

The zero waste philosophy, as defined by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), goes beyond reusing and recycling by considering a product’s entire life cycle and opting for options that generate minimal waste and packaging.

For example, instead of using disposable plastic razors, someone dedicated to the zero waste lifestyle would choose a metal safety razor and always carry a reusable water bottle.

During a trip to Starbucks, the Redditor was pleasantly surprised to discover that they could bring their own reusable container for their drink.

They shared their excitement in the post, stating, “I just walked into Starbucks, and walked out with a drink in my own reusable container. I had previously considered buying one of their reusable cups, but was undecided.”

The Redditor also expressed gratitude towards the r/ZeroWaste community members who informed them about the option of bringing their own cup.

By doing so, they not only aligned with their personal philosophy of waste reduction but also experienced “a double win” when they requested used coffee grounds for their compost bin.

Starbucks graciously provided them with a large bag of coffee grounds, which serve as excellent natural fertilizer for gardens and can even repel certain pests.

To provide visual evidence, the Redditor shared a picture of the bag of coffee grounds they received alongside their full coffee cup. The bag, clearly designed for this purpose, featured a Starbucks label with the words “Grounds For Your Garden.”

One enthusiastic commenter expressed their love for receiving the coffee grounds, while the original poster shared their surprise at finding a couple of wilted lettuce leaves inside the bag, ultimately agreeing that this unexpected food waste would benefit their garden.
