European clubs are increasingly worried about Saudi Arabia’s growing financial influence in the football world. Previously, it was assumed that only players nearing the end of their careers would entertain offers from the Middle East. However, the possibility of high-profile figures like Jordan Henderson, Riyad Mahrez, and Sadio Mane moving to Saudi Arabia is causing concerns among established powerhouses and UEFA itself. Mahrez has reportedly already agreed to a lucrative contract with Al Ahli, while there are indications that Henderson is willing to leave Liverpool to join former teammate Steven Gerrard. Mane is also pushing for a transfer from Bayern Munich, and more big names are expected to follow suit before the summer transfer window closes. Not only players but managers are being targeted as well, with Fulham’s Marco Silva yet to commit to a new deal due to Saudi interest.
Meanwhile, Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez may face a battle to stay at the club as Chelsea considers making a move for the Argentine World Cup winner. Pochettino, the new Chelsea manager, has made signing a new number one goalkeeper one of his main priorities and admires Martinez. The stumbling block in any potential deal would be Villa’s asking price, as Martinez signed a five-year contract just last year. Chelsea may wait until later in the transfer window to make an approach, as they prioritize strengthening their midfield following a squad clear-out. Currently, Kepa Arrizabalaga and Marcus Bettinelli are the only senior goalkeepers at Stamford Bridge after Edouard Mendy’s move to Saudi Arabia. Another option that Chelsea is considering is Brighton’s Rob Sanchez, who has a good relationship with Chelsea’s goalkeeping coach Ben Roberts from their time together at the Amex Stadium.
In other news, Arnaut Danjuma is open to a move to Everton, six months after turning his back on the club in favor of joining Tottenham. In January, Danjuma was on the verge of signing for Everton on loan from Villarreal when Tottenham swooped in and secured the deal. However, the Dutchman’s spell in north London has been frustrating, leading him to consider a move to Everton once again. There is reportedly a willingness on Danjuma’s part to join Sean Dyche’s side. Everton is also in talks with Manchester United for forward Anthony Elanga and has shown strong interest in Leeds’ Willy Gnonto, as previously reported.
Lastly, Wolves have withdrawn their interest in Bristol City youngster Alex Scott, clearing the way for Bournemouth to potentially sign the teenager. Wolves had previously made an £18 million bid for Scott, which was rejected. However, they no longer see it as a financially feasible deal. Bournemouth, on the other hand, has also had an offer of £15 million plus add-ons turned down but remains keen on acquiring Scott. The midfielder is eager to join a club where he can immediately join the first team. Tottenham has also been tracking Scott, but his preference is to join a club where he can have regular playing time.
